JOAN ESSEX JOHNSON
I find inspiration for my paintings from the movement of light across form and the details that are revealed. This is true for all subjects. Each composition is a carefully studied arrangement of objects and light that evokes a pleasing combination of form, value and emotion.
In the case of my still lifes, the objects themselves have personal meaning, such as the violin made by my great grandfather, flowers from my garden, shells from my collection, and pieces of family silver.
Most recently, I focused on landscape painting, and was particularly influenced by the Hudson River School. As I live on the Chesapeake Bay, I want to portray the emotion and beauty in its unique light and forms.
I was born and raised in Northern California where I received my early art training from the University of California at Berkeley. Following a desire to become a realist painter, I studied with Ann Schuler for 5 years at the Schuler School of Fine Art in Baltimore, MD. There I learned a painting process that is based on the techniques of the Old Masters.

I have exhibited for over 15 years in the Baltimore - Washington area and my paintings are found in many private collections. Also, I have participated in many juried shows with the Oil Painters of America, the Internatioinal Guild of Realism, and the Natioinal Oil and Acrylic Painters Society.
I have been represented by Bendann Galleries in Baltimore, MD, Gallery RoCa in Havre de Grace, MD, Foxhall Gallery, Washington, D.C., Color Wheel Gallery 65 in Mclean, VA, and most recently by Main Street Gallery in Annapolis, MD. |
